Tasty Bonfire Night Treats to Make with the Kids
When it’s chilly outside, there’s nothing better than getting cosy in the kitchen with some traditional autumnal recipes. Bonfire night is a great excuse to break out the baking pans and get creative, so here are our favourite easy bakes and makes that the kids will love!
Cinder Toffee
The magical alchemy of cinder toffee never gets old. Once it bubbles and froths, you know you’ve created a little bit of magic in your very own kitchen.
All you need is caster sugar, golden syrup and some bicarbonate of soda. The bicarb is the most important magic ingredient.
Melt the sugar and caster sugar together and then add the bicarb and watch it whoosh up into pillowy deliciousness!
BBC Good Food has a great video to show you exactly how it’s done. Watch it here.
Hot Apple Pie Juice
This is a great make for popping into a Thermos flask and taking with you on cold day adventures.
Heat up some freshly pressed apple juice in a pan, adding a tablespoon of brown sugar, two cloves, a vanilla pod and a teaspoon each of cinnamon and allspice. Once it’s nice and warmed through, strain to take out the cloves, and pour into your flask for a warming drink later.
Don’t forget your mugs!
Bonfire Toffee
Black as night and sweet as can be, bonfire toffee is the classic bonfire night treat everyone remembers.
Using thick, black, oozy treacle, soft brown sugar, cream of tartar (tartaric acid) and butter, you can make your own deliciously creamy, tangy treacle at home. Be careful with the kids on this one, as it gets very hot. Perhaps they can help you with the sugar thermometer?

Cinder Toffee Biscuits
Remember that cinder toffee you made earlier? Use it to create these delicious honeycomb biscuits, perfect for packing up and taking to the fireworks display.
Perfect with coffee or for a school playtime treat, you can make these biscuits and store them in an airtight box for up to a week.
These delicious biscuits use demerara sugar for a deep, golden colour and rich flavour, and are topped with chocolate and cinder toffee for an extra yummy crunch.
Bonfire Night Bangers
Everyone loves a banger on bonfire night, and if you’re having a cold-weather BBQ at home, why not try making your own hot sauce?
Get some delicious sausages of your preference from your local butcher, and marinate them in soy sauce, chilli flakes, honey and garlic. Look at this recipe for more inspiration.
And now for the hot sauce. Sure you could buy some, but where’s the fun in that? Read about why you should make your own here, and then follow this super simple recipe to get your sausages sizzlin’!
The most important thing about Bonfire night is to wrap up warm, get out there and enjoy yourselves! Be safe, use gloves with sparklers and always stay a safe distance away from bonfires and fireworks. Have fun!
