French Onion Soup

We’re starting this list off with classic French onion soup. The definition of comforting, a bowl of hot French onion soup topped with cheese and a crusty slice of baguette sounds like our idea of a tempting night in.

French chef Mickael Weiss’ recipe walks you through creating the perfect bowl of French onion soup. In addition to the onions, some of the other ingredients include good quality vegetable or chicken stock, dry white wine and Gruyère cheese.

The key to a delicious French onion soup is ensuring you give the onions enough time to caramelise. Expect to invest between 30 to 40 minutes to allow the sweet flavours to escape the onions.

Cheese and Onion Quiche

Another classic originating from France, cheese and onion quiche is packed with richness and flavour. This recipe calls for caramelised onions in a jar or caramelised onion chutney, but you can caramelise your own onions by slowly cooking them in your oil of choice for around forty minutes.

Putting together the pastry might seem like an expert task, but believe us, the effort pays off in the end! You’ll be glad when you finally get to settle in with a thick, warm slice of your freshly baked cheese and onion quiche.

Welsh Onion Cake

This BBC Good Food recipe takes the simple, traditional Welsh onion cake and manages to make it tastier and more well-rounded with the addition of leeks and cheese (Caerphilly cheese, to be specific, but any other sharp, crumbly cheese can be substituted in). The main stars of this dish, though, remain the thinly sliced floury potatoes and the sticky fried onions.

Serve your Welsh onion cake as a side with a roast meat main, or enjoy it all on its own!

French Onion Cottage Pie

French onion soup makes another appearance on this list, but in an entirely different form. If you’re a fan of shepherd pies and cottage pies, then you’ll be delighted to give this French onion cottage pie recipe a try.

This recipe requires quite a list of ingredients, but the end result is the ultimate comfort food, topped with a crunchy Gruyère breadcrumb layer and filled with a delicious combination of beef mince, caramelised onion and cheesy mash. This makes for a wonderful family dinner everyone will enjoy.

Sausage and Stuffing Toad-in-the-Hole with Onion Gravy

Caramelised onion chutney is the star player in this final recipe, a toad-in-the-hole consisting of bangers encased in Yorkshire pudding. It’s all served with an onion gravy that’s both savoury and sweet, thanks to the Marmite and the caramelised onion chutney. This is an easy recipe that appears simple on the surface but is packed with more flavour than you might realise.

Until next time…
