5 Lunch Ideas for an Al-Desk-o Meal
Fed up of the same old homemade lunches at work? Or perhaps you’re feeling less than inspired by the range of pre-packed sandwiches at the supermarket. Well, no more. Today on the My Appliances blog, we’re shaking things up a bit, following the recent news that us office workers tend to eat at our desk and dedicate just 16 minutes to a break at 12pm-ish.
Bringing you five interesting lunch ideas for an al-desko lunch (see what we did there?!), we’re ensuring that even if you don’t leave your laptop for your dinner, it’ll still be an enjoyable experience.
Exotic Salads
Not just any salad…this is an ‘exotic salad’ – and the BBC Good Food site has all the tips on how to whip up a tasty one. Experiment with flavour combinations and use a mixture of leaves, grains or pulses. Think the Instagram-worthy ‘bowl food’ craze, but in a Tupperware…and you’re well on your way to a tasty and interesting-looking lunch.
Open Sandwiches
Want to save on calories but still enjoy a tasty sandwich? The ‘open sandwich’ is the way to do it, as it minimises bread but still packs a flavour punch – providing you get creative with your fillers. The Kitchn site has lots of ideas, actually, with boiled egg and avocado being high on the list.
The BLTA Wrap
What’s a BLTA, you may wonder? It’s basically a BLT, but with avocado – and it looks really tasty. Check it out here. Of course, you don’t have to add avocado if you don’t want to, but it makes for a refreshing twist on the classic BLT. Wraps are generally a good choice for lunch, too, as they won’t leave you feeling too bloated and come with fewer calories, too. It’s win, win. Pair yours with a small exotic salad and you have yourself an appetising lunch. We also like the look of this vegan-friendly wrap, below.
Ham & Cheese Croissant
Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box…those croissants you bought for your breakfast could actually double up as a lunch. Add ham, cheese and a little bit of celery – and microwave if you’re in need of something warm on your break. Filling and delicious, it’s simple to prepare as well. Goat’s cheese and red onion also makes a good combination – and it’s perfect for vegetarians, too.
Noodle Salad
Say yes to Oriental cuisine on your lunch hour and prepare a noodle salad ahead of your working day. The Tasty site has a great recipe for a sesame-ginger soba noodle salad, which sounds as tasty as it is healthy. In winter, the site suggests swapping asparagus – used in the salad – for shaved fennel or finely-chopped kale.
