Freshen Up Your Oven
Got a grotty oven? Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. But don’t reach for the harsh chemicals straight away.
For baked on grease, leave your racks, trays and oven shelves to soak in water from a just-boiled kettle and plenty of Fairy liquid. This stuff is made to battle oil and grease, and it’s often all you really need — alongside a bit of a scrub.
For the baked on grime on your glass oven door and the inside walls, take a dishwasher tablet and damp it slightly. Rub it directly on the glass and walls and watch that grease come right away!
Scrub That Sink
Shine your sink up good as new with a quick deep clean.
Cif — or any cream cleaner with granules suitable for bathrooms — is perfect for sinks. Splodge it on and work it in with a lightly abrasive sponge. Don’t scrub too hard, or you’ll scratch the surface, dulling it.
Rinse the cream cleaner away and spray with an anti-bacterial cleaner such as Method Wild Rhubarb, Astonish Pine or a homemade spray made from Zoflora and water. Wipe after a few minutes with a micro-fibre glass cloth.
If you have a stainless steel sink, shine it up even more with a specialist stainless steel spray. Follow the directions to avoid streaks.
Deep Clean Your Fridge
After Christmas fridges can get smelly, what with all that leftover cheese, unknown foil-wrapped goodies and slowly rotting veg.
Have a good cleanout, binning or composting everything that’s definitely inedible. Then, transfer everything else into sealable tupperware-style containers to keep them fresh for longer (and keep their odours locked in.)
Wash each drawer and fridge shelf with soapy water — you don’t need anything harsher — and then wipe down the inside with soapy water too, checking that the drain at the back of the fridge is unblocked. Then give everything a good wipe with an anti-bacterial spray.
Add a little dish of bicarbonate of soda to the back of the fridge to absorb odours (we use a little ramekin from a créme brulée) and place everything back inside where you can see it clearly. If you can see it, you’re more likely to eat it, and less food goes to waste!
