Views: The First Episode of the Bake Off

So come on, what did you make of the first episode of this year’s The Great British Bake Off. It may have aired minus Mary Berry but (shock horror!) we almost didn’t notice. We thought Prue Leith made a great addition to the show, as did Noel Fielding, who brought a few laughs for a spot of light relief.

Who are you rooting for this time around; do you have a favourite contestant already? Don’t forget to follow us on our social media pages (details below!) to let us know what you reckon to the show and its new Channel 4 home.

Reviews: Our Essential Baking Kit

Did you catch our latest blog? In it, My Appliances’ Lauren talks about some of the essential kit you can add to your kitchen, if the Great British Bake Off has inspired you to give sponge-making a go. Putting her money where her mouth is, she tried one of the pieces of baking gear for herself: piping bags. This is what she had to say:

“I’ve never been able to master the art of piping. And while I can whip up a Victoria sponge or a set of cupcakes like no other (I know, not to brag…) I always let myself down when it comes to making them look pretty. So I decided, with the Bake Off looming last week, to get over my fear of the piping bag once and for all. In the past I’d used the plastic food bag-esque method – but minus a great deal of luck. I know this works for a lot of people as my Mum’s a Piping Queen (official title!) but no for me. So, I began researching alternatives – and these, from the baking brand Tala caught my eye immediately.

“With a step-by-step how-to guide, and all the nozzles I’d need to get going, I put my skills (or lack thereof) to the test by baking a set of 12 cupcakes. And while I can’t tell you they looked quite as good as the main image here on this blog, they were certainly more eye-catching than my last effort.

“If you’re wanting to make the foray into cake piping, too, you can’t go wrong with the Tala kit. Currently on the Lakeland site at less than a tenner, it’s a great little beginner’s tin of tricks – and if you still can’t master piping once you’ve bought it, it won’t have cost you the earth. Have you tried piping, too? Let me know how you got on”
