Spring Cleaning Special: Kitchen Gadgets You Can Live Without

If you’ve been keeping up with our ‘Spring Cleaning Special’ posts you’ll now know all there is to know about eco-friendly kitchen products, and time-saving laundry hacks. But we don’t want to stop there when it comes to offering you handy tips and tricks.

This week, we want to help you clear out your cupboards to ensure a less-cluttered kitchen – and we’re starting with those gadgets you hardly ever use. That dusty old coffee machine, the hand mixer, the smoothie machine – do you really need them? Here’s what you can easily do without in the hub of the home:

The Freestanding Kitchen Mixer

Sure, they’re great for pretending you’re in the Great British Bake Off tent, but do you really need a freestanding mixer? After all, they do take up a lot of space on your kitchen top or cupboard. We say ‘no’ to freestanding mixers, especially if you’re simply planning to make the odd cake.

Instead, invest in an electric hand whisk, which is much more compact and will do pretty much the same job. It’ll be cheaper, too.

Want to opt for something cheaper still? A good old-fashioned hand whisk is your go-to utensil if you’re not afraid of putting a bit of elbow grease into dessert-making.

Pizza Shears

No need to buy any pizza shears; a good knife will do the job if you’d like to cut down the junk you keep in your utensils drawer.

Pestle and Mortar

So, it’s hardly a gadget as such, but it is an item you can do without. The pestle and mortar can easily be replaced by a hardwearing bowl and the end of a rolling pin – et voila!

Smoothie Maker

If you have a food blender, you won’t need a dedicated food mixer. After all, they’re pretty much the same thing. Save yourself some money and some kitchen space and just invest in a quality blender.

Egg Separator

It’s easy to separate eggs – it might just take a little longer if you don’t have an egg separator. Just leave yourself plenty of time, so you’re not working against the clock before your dinner guests arrive.

Coffee Machine

There are some great coffee machines out there, but there are also some really great instant coffee these days now, too. You really can enjoy a barrister-style cuppa if you buy the right coffee, so make sure you test a few and you may save yourself a pretty penny on a top-of-the-range machine.

Juice Extractor

Here’s another gadget you just don’t need. Again, your blender should be able to help here, making light work of berries for your morning beverage and saving you some money in the process.
